The department enforces the environmental provisions of the Act and legislation to ensure that all petroleum operations are carried out in an environmentally friendly manner employing up to date industry practices and techniques

In carrying out the above mandate PRDS officials work in close consultation with the Central Environmental Authority, the Marine Environment Protection Authority and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Environmental Impact Studies are required prior to authorizing most petroleum operations. Scope of the EIS will be set by the PRDS in consultation with the above agencies.

An Environmental Fund is established to support Environmental Research in Sri Lanka offshore and Contractors are required to make annual contributions during each Contract year as per the applicable Petroleum Resources Agreements (PRAs).
