Overview

The Legal & Land Department is mandated with a blend of many vital tasks, essentially to ensure that all petroleum exploration operations are conducted in compliance with the Petroleum Resources Act No. 26 of 2003 and the other governing laws of the country.

While paying heed to existing domestic legal frame work, the Legal Department is entrusted with the duty of carrying out research to gather global practices which could be applied, where appropriate, in petroleum operations of Sri Lanka.

The Legal Department monitors all petroleum exploration related agreements executed between the Government of Sri Lanka and other preferred parties including Petroleum Resources Agreements to verify that contractual obligations are carried out in a timely manner..

All matters related to issuance of license are handled by this department.
